Current Grants to Support Goals
21st CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTERS: We currently offer programs and services in the AYC’s BG Club, George Mitchell School, South End Learning Center, and the Hall School. Our goal is to improve school performance of 40-60 high risk, low learning students in the Waterville Public Schools not meeting standards in reading, writing, and math, and to increase participation in cultural and performing arts, community service, physical activity and nutrition during non-school hours.
DRUG FREE COMMUNITIES, ESSENTIAL PREVENTION SERVICES, and HEALTHY MAINE PARTNERSHIP GRANTS: With these grants the Prevention Coalition is working to sustain and enhance the work started with the One ME grant to reduce and prevent substance abuse in youth. For more information about this work, click "The Prevention Coalition" link on the gold bar above. NEWMAN & REISERT FOUNDATION GRANTS: (Serving in the Second Baptist Church in South End) Our goal is to provide after school program in the South End for 5-12 year old low income kids that do not attend existing after school programs and who are not currently meeting the learning requirements in reading, writing, and math. We also work to increase participation in cultural and performing arts, physical activity, nutrition, and community service. UGLY DUCKLINGS: GWC4CY partnered with Hardy Girls Healthy Woman to produce the award winning Ugly Duckling play. This piece examines the unhealthy turns that relationships between girls can take when they are not allowed their natural expression, and addresses the national youth suicide crisis and its roots in bias-based harassment. The play production occurred in September of 2005 and a community action kit for schools across the nation is now available. For more information or to order a kit, email info@hghw.org
