Local Youth Come Together at Youth 2 Youth Summit at Colby College
Monday, October 29, 2007
Up to 60 youth from local school districts in Greater Waterville will gather on Friday, November 2nd for a Youth 2 Youth Summit. This day-long summit, the third held in two years, will take place at Roberts Union at Colby College in Waterville. It is an event to bring together local youth groups that are working to address issues in their schools such as bullying, tobacco and alcohol use, poor nutrition, and obesity through prevention and social change initiatives. The theme for this summit, “Setting the Standard, Changing the Norm,” reflects the day’s focus on providing youth with tools to bring about paradigm shifts in their schools. The keynote address will be delivered by Chris Trout, a nationally-renowned speaker whose strengths-based philosophy will help students focus on their talents and gifts. Groups will then have the opportunity to hear about the work taking place at other schools as well as spend time planning their own activities. Nancy Findlan, Project Director of the Greater Waterville Communities for Children and Youth’s Prevention Coalition, says, “Our overall goal is to assist youth to use their skills and create opportunities for them to make an impact in their schools and communities while tackling some very difficult issues affecting them at this time. Engaging youth in projects of relevance to them is the approach we feel is the most successful”. Youth planning to attend the Summit on Friday are from Lawrence High School’s PRIDE group, Messalonskee High School, Averill High School’s Youth Senate, and the Central Maine Public Safety Explorers group. The Youth 2 Youth Summit is sponsored by Greater Waterville Communities for Children and Youth, Healthy Maine Partnership of Greater Waterville, and the Prevention Coalition of Greater Waterville.
